The Moderate Party of RI believes that we must preserve the natural beauty and resources of Rhode Island.

We support an aggressive program of protection and enhancement and believe that there are many mechanisms through which we can and should do this.

We know that through research, analysis, smart planning - and a little common sense - that we can discover, create and implement programs and policies that maintain and ensure the "quality of life" aspects of our environment and, at the same time, encourage appropriate economic growth opportunities.

The MPRI recognizes that things change fast and that policy and thought must be flexible enough to respond to changing conditions - whether they be economic, regulatory or change due to new discoveries. Over the next few months the MPRI Environmental Policy Committee will be inviting stakeholders to a forum that will allow these groups an opportunity to present ideas, concerns and policy suggestions to ensure that Rhode Island is beautiful, clean and forward thinking when it comes to environmental policies.

Some of the areas we will focus on are:
  • Preservation of drinking water and finding the appropriate balance between protecting the Narragansett Bay, the fishing industry and recreational use of the Bay
  • Appropriate economic development of port areas
  • Adequate public transportation system, aggressive recycling program and better waste removal practices
  • Continued research and use of wind, solar and other alternative energy solutions
  • Sufficient preservation of Open Space
